The attitudes which are vetoed are selfish ambition and vain conceit (verse 3) and self pre-occupation (verse 4) They are an unbecoming trio indeed and perhaps the last mentioned is the root of the other two. Selfish ambition has already been mentioned (cf. 1:17). It is a seeking of influence and position for oneself which shows no compunction
